Gaston's Tavern

Outside the castle and Belle's house is Gaston's tavern. It is themed to look like the tavern where Gaston sings his title song in the original film. The tavern has a portrait of Gaston over a large fireplace, with antlers and buck-skins hung on the wall.

Most of the glassware are mugs and barrells line the wall. Just outside the tavern is a water fountain of Gaston, posing, with his foot on LeFou's head

The Beast's Castle

In September 2009, it was announced at the D23 Expo that Fantasyland would be expanded to incorporate Disney Princess and Disney Fairies characters, along with a larger 3 ring circus-themed Dumbo area.

Meet and Greet
It was announced that the Beast's Castle would be included as a meet-and-greet with Belle.

Guests get to meet Belle outside of her father's cottage (where Ariel's Grotto used to be) and they explore the house. Belle reveals her magic mirror, which transports them to the Beast's Castle. Belle leads the way to the library and reads the guests the classic story. The castle is also an interactive walkthrough exhibit.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

In September 2009 at the first D23 expo, The Walt Disney Company announced the major expansion plan for Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom.[3] On January 18, 2011, it was announced that the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train new roller coaster would be a part of the Fantasyland expansion plan.[4][5][6] It is expected to open in 2012.[2]

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will be a steel roller coaster which is mostly indoors, with some outdoor segments. Unlike other Disney Roller Coasters like California Screamin and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, this attraction will be less intense and be a more family oriented Roller Coaster. It will feature a new roller coaster ride system that will simulate swaying and tipping one would expect to experience in a mine cart

The Great Goofini

History
A petting zoo named Grandma Duck's Petting Farm previously occupied the site.[1] This petting zoo was home to Minnie Moo, a holstein cow that was famous for having a Hidden Mickey on its side.[2] She was moved to Fort Wilderness after the Barnstormer was built. Minnie Moo died in 2001 from natural causes.[3] The barn which housed the petting zoo was integrated into this ride.

In 1996, The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm was constructed and on October 1,[citation needed] it officially opened to the public.[4] The attraction was one of three at American Disney parks (including Grizzly River Run at Disney's California Adventure and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios) which took its name from former attractions at the now-defunct Opryland USA theme park in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mickey's Toontown Fair closed permanently in February of 2011 in order to make way for the expansion of Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland.[5] Some elements of Mickey's Toontown Fair will be demolished and others will be re-themed to a new Storybook Circus area. The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm is being re-themed to The Great Goofini.[6] "The New Fantasyland will be constructed in phases with most new experiences open by 2013."[7]

The Barnstormer in Mickey's Toontown Fair was found at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm.[4] It appeared to be an airplane school taught by Goofy. The story behind this ride included guests flying in Goofy's homemade airplane as it swooped, twisted and turned.[8] It then went full speed into a barn. Inside the barn were Audio-Animatronic chickens[8] from Epcot's former World of Motion attraction. The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm was similar to Gadget's Go Coaster at Mickey's Toontown in Disneyland and Toontown in Tokyo Disneyland.

In the attraction's queue, near the "popcorn plants", guests could see a mess of wires which formed a Hidden Mickey.[9]

Guests board one of two trains which each site 16 riders. The train is taken up a chain lift hill to a height of 9.1 metres (30 ft). 207 metres (679 ft) of twists, turns, and elevation changes follow, before the ride comes to a halt in the brake run. Riders will reach a top speed of 40.2 kilometres per hour (25.0 mph) on the one-minute ride.[10]

The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Under Sea Adventure

HistoryA dark ride featuring The Little Mermaid was supposed to open at Disneyland Paris and Magic Kingdom parks in the early to mid 90's. Early plans for Hong Kong Disneyland also included this ride. The ride was scrapped, but a visual idea was included on the Platinum Edition DVD of The Little Mermaid in 2006.[5]

A different version is scheduled to open June 3, 2011 at Disney California Adventure.[1] The ride will take the place in the area of the theater that played host to the Golden Dreams movie hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. The theater itself has been torn down. The restrooms by Golden Dreams have been relocated across the way in the San Francisco buildings. The previous area they occupied has been torn down and is taken up by part of the show building. [1] In September 2009, Disney officials announced that Mickey's Toontown Fair at the Magic Kingdom would be demolished,[6] leaving Goofy's Barnstormer to be rethemed to The Great Goofini.[7] This will give more room to Fantasyland, which will be filled with this ride and meet-and-greets with the Disney Princesses and a larger Dumbo area.[6]

[edit] Summary[edit] Queue areaThe attraction will be set underwater. At Disney California Adventure, the building is modeled after a 20th-century aquarium. The Palace of Fine Arts replica from Golden Dreams will remain but redecorated with an Ariel statue on top.[8] A garden and water play area is planned to accompany the ride; it will be located next to the show building. In the Magic Kingdom, the building will be featured in a recreation of Prince Eric's castle. Guests will walk across a bridge over a pond that resembles a beach with the castle on it. A statue of Ariel doing the famous pose in Part of Your World (reprise) will be featured on the left of the bridge.

To the left of the attraction is an entrance labeled "Ariel's Grotto", suggesting that the meet-and-greet with Ariel will be moved closer to the attraction.

[edit] RideThe attraction will be a dark ride, similar to Peter Pan's Flight and Snow White's Scary Adventures, but it will have an Omnimover ride system like the one currently in use at the Haunted Mansion. The ride will transport guests under the sea and will focus on many of the major scenes and musical numbers from the movie. Guests will ride in cars themed to resemble large seashells; one car designed for use by wheelchair guests will be themed to resemble Triton's chariot.

Characters will include Ariel, Prince Eric, King Triton, Sebastian, Flounder, and Ursula.[9] Scuttle will narrate the story of Ariel's Undersea Adventure. The music will be composed by the original film's composer, Alan Menken. Jodi Benson confirmed in an interview in June 2010 that she will be lending her voice for the attraction.

Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort has ten main attractions. There are also two character greeting areas; Ariel's Grotto, which features The Little Mermaid, and the Fairytale Garden, in which Belle from Beauty and the Beast reads a classic Disney story. Cinderella Castle contains a mosaic depicting the story of Cinderella, and features Cinderella's Royal Table restaurant.

In September 2009, it was announced at the D23 Expo that Fantasyland would be expanded to incorporate Disney Princess and Disney Fairies characters, along with a larger 3 ring circus-themed Dumbo area. The recently installed figure of the country’s 44th chief executive – which comes to life with recognizable mannerisms and makes comments that were recorded recently at the White House – is only part of an eight-month makeover so significant that the iconic attraction in the park’s Liberty Square has been re-titled Hall of Presidents: A Celebration of Liberty’s Leaders.

The renovation of Space Mountain

Space Mountain closed on April 19, 2009 for a lengthy renovation project.[14][15] It will be the first extensive renovation since a previous closure in September 1999,[15] and is estimated to cost USD $12.3 million.[16] A major component of the renovation is the installation of a new track for the roller coasters, although the current layout will be left unchanged.[15] Other renovations include an upgraded queue area, including some new interactive elements,[16] and a new ceiling for the dome's shell.[15] Disney officials did not indicate if this was the full extent of the project or if other changes were in store, but a spokeswoman for the park stated, "We're retaining many of the classic elements that made Space Mountain a rite of passage at the Magic Kingdom that's been enjoyed by generations."[15] The current schedule has Space Mountain re-opening on November 21, 2009.

liberty belle river boat ( extinct? )

In Liberty Square in the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World, FL is the little talked about Liberty Belle Riverboat that cruises around the Rivers of America. Now I can’t say that every single visit in the last 37 years since the park opened and I’ve been attending that I have gone on this. I have not. I do if time allows and if those I’m with are also interested.

The Liberty Belle is an authentic Steam Powered Sternwheeler. I love Steam boats anyway and this one is just particularly majestic making it’s way around Tom Sawyer Island along the Rivers of America. It’s a 17 minute ride and oddly enough, although it was build to be an authentic Steam Powered Paddle boat, it actually runs on a track around the river! Yeah, that surprised me too.

This Steam Powered beauty was actually built at Disney World and it took 6 months to build. The other Riverboat that they had was accidentally dropped from a crane in 1980 and they had to stop using her because she had terrible damage done to her hull.

This boat has three levels and actually can hold up to 450 people. What I do like about going on this boat is being able to get some really nice pictures with my camera. You go by “Big Thunder Mountain Railroad” and you can get some great pictures of that and you also go by several scenes and things that have been placed there to keep your interest. You see a burning cabin, a Gazebo, alligator area, an Indian Village, Moose and Deer. None of it is real of course, but it makes the ride a little more interesting. The boat circles Tom Sawyer Island too.

It’s usually a nice cool ride on the Riverboat. The movement of the boat over the water always seems to create a light wind in your face that is so welcome when it’s been so hot in the park all day. There usually isn’t any problem getting on the boat fairly quickly when you go. It holds a lot of people and usually the next boat that leaves is usually able to take anyone waiting. Makes for a good fill in break if you’re just waiting on the parade or some other show.

My kids liked this ride when they were young but then again, they have always been fans of boats and water like their Mom! I think if you have time, this is another classic Disney ride that gets you out of the mayhem of the rest of the park and lets you take a leisurely ride and rest your back and feet and gets you out of the sun. I think Disney knew just what he was doing with the rides he has put in this park that although aren’t the most exciting, provide a very necessary break from the heat and the chaos in the rest of the park with people running and trying to get on all the big, thrilling and popular rides. Yup, I do think Walt knew exactly what he was doing!

stitch's supersonic celebration!

The wait is over as Stitch’s Supersonic Celebration, is in full swing. Inspired by his favorite singer, Elvis, and with the help of rocking robots and dancing divas, our favorite alien pal, Stitch, gets into the galactic groove in the new show which runs six times daily in the Magic Kingdom theme park. The 25-minute interactive show features real-time animation and plenty of surprises.
The new Tomorrowland attraction features the same cutting-edge technology used in Turtle Talk With Crush and Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, letting guests interact with an animated Stitch in one-on-one encounters. The fuzzy, lovable alien, star of Lilo & Stitch, spots specific guests in the audience, asks questions and entertains them in a playful and personalized way.

The Magic Kingdom's Hall of Presidents attraction is closed now through July 4 for a major refurbishment.

Along with either a likeness of John McCain or Barack Obama, the attraction, which opened in 1971, will include George Washington having a speaking role.

The Hall of Presidents features a speech by Abraham Lincoln accompanied by an address by the president currently in office. Both Clinton and Bush recorded their parts for the attraction and it is hoped that the newly elected president will do the same.

Pam Fisher, Senior Imagineering Show Writer stated "We'll do everything in our power to make it so. We've been really lucky so far. It is quite an experience to arrive in the White House and actually be present when the president records his speech for the Hall of Presidents."

The likenesses of the 43 President's has been sculpted by Blaine Gibson. Now at 90 years of age, he is supervising the creation of the latest figure by Valerie Edwards.

A digital video projection system will provide better views of the artwork by Disney artists Sam McKim, Herb Ryman and John DeCuir.

The biggest improvement will be the addition of LED lighting in spotlighting each president as he's introduced. Fisher commented "That is my No. 1 dream and hope of the show: to make the introduction of the presidents easier to follow. We think that's really the highlight of the show."

Park News - (5/18/09) A little something called the Pirate League will open at the Magic Kingdom (in Adventureland) on June 29th. From the sound of it, this is where all the aspiring Pirates should go as they will offer special packages of costumes and accessories to turn you into a Pirate for the day. On the bottom end of things will be the First Mate or Empress packages for $49.95. The former will include a bandanna, choice of facial effect (scar, tattoo, eye patch, fake teeth, etc), a sword and pirate coin necklace, a 5x7 photo and personalized pirate oath. The Empress package aimed at the girls is pretty much the same but offers pretty makeup effects, nail polish, etc in place of the scars and fake teeth. Of course those who want to go all out can pay $124.95 for the Captain’s Package and get a full costume, facial effects, sword, necklace, 3 photos and the oath. To make a reservation for this, you can call 407-WDW-CREW.
In other news, Disney has announced Disney’s Celebrate America on the 4th of July, a ‘Concert in the Sky” that will dazzle the guests at 9pm at the Magic Kingdom. The park will also put on SpectroMagic at 10:30pm that sale night.

Magic Jouneys ( extinct )

Magic Journeys was the first 3D movie created by Walt Disney Imagineering for a Disney theme park. This 3-D film was one of the opening attractions at EPCOT Center on October 1, 1982. It was directed by Murray Lerner and featured a song by Robert and Richard Sherman. Starting on June 16, 1984, it began its short run at Disneyland inside the new Magic Eye Theater in Tomorrowland. In January 1986, Disneyland closed the show and Walt Disney World followed suit on February 9 in order to make way for the new space adventure, Captain EO. Walt Disney World later moved the movie into the Fantasyland Theater inside the Magic Kingdom on December 15, 1987. It played there for 6 years until it closed on December 1, 1993. It was removed in order to make room for the Legend of the Lion King show.

Magic Journeys looked at the world through the eyes of a child. The film started with children running through a meadow and looking at clouds. Someone blew on a dandelion and the seeds then flew away, turning into stars and then turned into the sun. Next the kids were seen flying a kite at the beach. The kite then turned into a bird, a fish, a school of fish, a flock of birds, bird wings, a Pegasus, a horse and then finally into a merry-go-round. While the children rode the carousel, they began reaching for a brass ring spinning next to the carousel; it became a moon, a bat, a witch, a mask and finally into the Sphinx.
Attraction facts
During the movie's run at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center, the short Makin' Memories was played before the movie started.

While the movie was played at the Fantasyland Theater at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, the Disney short Working for Peanuts was used as the pre-show entertainment.

In a 1962 interview, Walt Disney talked about his new audio-animatronic technology in The Enchanted Tiki Room and untitled haunted house attraction. He said that he had similar plans for "all the Disney characters." In October 1, 1971, the Mickey Mouse Revue show opened as an 'E' ticket attraction in Fantasyland, in the Magic Kingdom, Florida. The show ran until it was closed on September 14, 1980. The building that housed it was renamed the Fantasyland Theater. Mickey Mouse Revue found a new home at Tokyo Disneyland park in Japan, where it plays to this day in Japanese. The attraction will close on May 25, 2009 to make way for Mickey's PhilharMagic, which is scheduled to open in 2011. [1]

The original theater at Walt Disney World sat 500 park guests, but the pre-show area only had room for 300 guests, a planning mistake.

Fantasyland Theater also showed Disney cartoons and occasional employee film festival events.

Skyway to Tommorowland ( extinct )

History
The Skyway at Disneyland opened on June 23rd, 1956. It was built by Vonroll, Ltd. based in Berne, Switzerland. It was the first Vonroll Type 101 aerial ropeway in the USA. Walt Disney Imagineering bought the ride from Switzerland. It was a 1947 Vonroll sidechair model. In 1959, a major renovation added The Submarine Voyage, the Disneyland Monorail, the Matterhorn (now a Fantasyland Attraction), and the Motorboat Cruise, but when the Matterhorn was planned it was designed to be built right in the path of the Skyway, so without a single closure of the Skyway, they tunneled through the Matterhorn. However, during the Fantasyland renovation at Disneyland in the mid-1980s, the Skyway made only roundtrips from Tomorrowland.

There is a legend, often told to new employees at Walt Disney World Resort, that Walt Disney got the inspiration to build a second theme park when a family decided to leave Disneyland after observing, from the Skyway, that rush hour traffic was beginning to build on the nearby Santa Ana Freeway (I-5). He determined that he needed to build a theme park in a more remote location to improve suspension of disbelief.

The Disneyland Skyway was removed on November 9th, 1994 due to stress cracks in the matterhorn roller battery supports. At Disneyland, the Fantasyland Skyway station remains but is off limits to guests and completely empty (no machinery. However, the Tomorrowland Skyway station has since been demolished. In 1998, Tokyo Disneyland closed their Skyway. The Fantasyland station was removed to make room for Pooh's Hunny Hunt, while the Tomorrowland station was remodeled into a candy store. At the Magic Kingdom, the Skyway was removed in 1999. The Tomorrowland station is off-limits to guests, while the Fantasyland station is now used for stroller parking. When the Disneyland Skyway closed, the holes in the Matterhorn were filled in and the supports were dismantled within weeks.

Another key reason for the decision to remove the Skyways was because they were in technical violation of the Americans With Disabilities Act. It was very difficult to load and unload mobility-impaired guests (one must step up when boarding and down when de-boarding), and this usually required having to stop the ride. Furthermore, wheelchairs could not be loaded onboard because the vehicles were too small.
Accidents
On Sunday morning, 17th April 1994, a 30-year-old man named Randle Charles fell approximately 20 feet from one of the Skyway cabins and landed in a tree near the "Alice in Wonderland" attraction. He was helped out of the tree by paramedics and taken to nearby Western Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Charles later filed a $25,000 negligence lawsuit against Disney, claiming that he had suffered permanent neck and back injuries as a result of his fall.

Despite the initial assertion of Mr. Charles' attorney that Randle "wasn't doing anything improper, and he certainly wasn't trying to get out of the ride," Charles indeed jumped, not fell, from his Skyway cabin. Charles' lawsuit was dismissed just before it was to go to trial on 23 September 1996; at that time he admitted that he "came out" of his Skyway cabin and that his lawsuit against Disney was "ill-advised."

In February 1999, a park custodian at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom was killed when the skyway started up unexpectedly while he was cleaning one of its platforms. Raymond Barlow, 65, was sweeping off a narrow skyway platform inaccessible to park guests an hour after the park's 9:00 A.M. opening when other cast members, unaware of his presence, started up the ride. Barlow, startled by the approaching gondola, grabbed onto it and tried to climb inside; he fell 40 feet into a flower bed, hitting a tree on the way down, and died. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration later ruled that the area in which Barlow had been working violated federal safety codes and fined Walt Disney World $4,500 for a "serious" violation of safety standards. Several months later, on November 9th, 1999, the Magic Kingdom's skyway was also permanently closed. Once again, the decision to close the attraction was supposedly based on factors other than its being involved in a recent accidental death.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride ( extinct )

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Florida was one of the Magic Kingdom's opening day attractions on October 1, 1971. Although it was modeled after the Disneyland attraction, it had some unique characteristics that set it apart from its California counterpart. The most obvious was that the Florida incarnation had two separate boarding areas. The vehicles (in the form of Jalopies) in each boarding area were on separate tracks that followed different paths, so riders would get a slightly different ride, depending on where they boarded.

It was not a thrill ride, and neither was the one at Disneyland, but it was not slow and quiet like most dark rides. It made sudden turns and often the vehicle would move at full speed towards an obstacle, which would move out of the way at the last second. At one point the vehicles on different tracks would head directly towards each other, giving the sense of an oncoming collision. It was a very stylized attraction and resembled a cartoon more than any other Disney ride. It contained highly ornate plywood characters and sets that were very reminiscent of the multiplane camerawork featured in many Disney films.

Despite the ride's popularity and many protests, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride closed on September 7, 1998 and was subsequently replaced with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Many have disputed the reason for Toad's departure, but some including Save Mr. Toad's Wild Ride believe that money was the deciding factor. And while minor tributes to the ride can be found in Disney World, including paintings of Mr. Toad and Moley within The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and a statue of Toad in a pet cemetery outside of Haunted Mansion, traces of "The Wind in the Willows" characters within Walt Disney World are minimal. Efforts have already been made to reconstruct the ride, including a 3D virtual recreation

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage ( extinct )

By 1955, Disney Studios did not have enough space to be able to keep the large sets used during production of the film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and so instead of destroying them, they became part of a walkthrough attraction in the Tomorrowland area of the newly opened Disneyland park in Anaheim, California. It quickly became popular, and allowed guests to tour the luxurious Grand Salon, the wheelhouse, as well as surviving an attack by the giant squid used during production, designed by special effects expert Bob Mattey. The walkthrough continued to attract guests until it was closed in 1966. Many of the sets were destroyed, and the building would soon house Adventure Thru Inner Space, later replaced in 1987 by Star Tours.

In 1959, an ambitious expansion of Tomorrowland in Disneyland was completed, which included the addition of new attractions, including the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Monorail, and Submarine Voyage. "Commissioned" on the June 6, 1959 in front of Richard Nixon, Walt Disney and his wife Lillian, and officers of the US Navy, the attraction made use of early animatronics to create underwater life, and the use of forced perspective to increase the feeling of realism. Eight submarines, painted in Cold War-friendly grey took guests through the attraction, which took place in a lagoon visible from Tomorrowland, and a large show building, hidden behind two waterfalls. It became extremely popular with guests, so much so that Walt Disney Imagineering were already working on an even more ambitious version for the forthcoming Florida Project concept, which would become Walt Disney World.

Project Florida And The Submarine Voyage's Successor
By the time development work for what is today Walt Disney World began, Disney imagineers had already been working-out a rough concept for a sister attraction to Disneyland's Submarine Voyage. However, it was not going to be a simple ride clone. The idea was to make as best use as possible of the larger space the company now owned in Florida, and what became 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea did indeed do just that. At 11.5 million gallons of water throughout, it would be one of the biggest and most expensive Disney attractions ever conceived.

It has long been thought that the Magic Kingdom attraction was originally intended to have been installed in place of the Submarine Voyage in California in 1959, as the two attractions were identical except for the themeing and some elements of the plot. However, sponsorship by General Dynamics is believed to have contributed to the blocking of this, and so the Submarine Voyage would open in 1959 with a non-specific theme, and with nuclear as opposed to Victorian submarines.

October 14, 1971
Despite the best efforts of the construction and installation teams attached to the 20,000 Leagues project, the attraction would ultimately open two weeks after the Magic Kingdom due to infrastructure problems with the lagoon. On October 14 1971 however, the first guests boarded one of the twelve (the ride is sometimes cited as having fourteen, which would be correct if counting the two submarines grappling with Giant Squids on either side of the track) submarines to take the ten minute voyage of discovery that would cover the surface of the earth from underwater, without ever leaving the state of Florida.

The completed attraction covered almost a quarter of Fantasyland, with the lagoon and caverns-hidden show building surrounded by palm trees and volcanic rock, meant to evoke the impression of Captain Nemo's Pacific Ocean base Vulcania. A storage facility at the back of the show building served to house submarines removed from the main line during day-to-day operation, and also included a dry dock for repair work.

Along the shores of the lagoon, small beaches were built, one with a chest of abandoned pirate treasure. The words "20,000 Leagues" spelled out in nautical code from signaling flags at the entrance to the attraction added a final subtle touch, despite a persistent rumor that they initially read "Seugael 20,000" on opening day.

The team of cast members operating the attraction played the roles of Nemo's ever-silent crew, and even wore authentic replicas of the screen production's costumes. Throughout the attractions life, the crews were almost exclusively male, with the first helmswoman beginning in the 1970s.

The Attraction Vehicles
One of the signature pieces of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea was the fleet of twelve passenger vehicles, adapted for theme park use from Harper Goff's Nautilus design for the 1954 Disney live-action version by Disney Imagineer George McGinnis. The basic hulls were constructed by Morgan Yacht in Clearwater, Florida, with the final building work being transferred to Tampa Ship mid-way through. This massive project was overseen by another veteran Imagineer, Bob Gurr. Upon delivery at Walt Disney World in August 1971, the vehicles weighed some forty tons, and were installed into a concrete guide (track), mounted on top of a mechanism to limit "bumping" accidents.

The attraction vehicles were not actual submarines, but instead boats in which the guests sat below water level. The interiors were a mix of metal paneling, rivets and bolts, as well as Victorian-esque fittings in the form of passenger seats that can flip outwards, and arm rests beneath the portholes, in keeping with the Harper Goff concept from the 1954 feature film. Each "guest" aboard the Nautilus had his or her own seat, as well as a round porthole to look out into the attraction. A small button located in the porthole recess was intended for defogging the window if needed, but this rarely worked.

Above the seating area was the sail (As it was known to the employees) where the "helmsman" stood and controlled the vehicle's operation. The "diving" effect that became so much of a part of the ride was actually produced by bubble machines located throughout the attraction, as well as using the waterfalls at the entrance to the show building.

Each of the twelve vehicles accommodated a total of forty Magic Kingdom guests, and would normally cycle throughout the attraction in packs of three. Post-closure, several vehicles were left stationary in the lagoon and by the dock, before the entire fleet was eventually pulled from the attraction in 1995. The submarines were regularly moved around to different locations in Walt Disney World backstage for several years, until eventually being stripped and buried in a landfill in 2004. Two of the vehicles were saved from the fleet's demise and were shipped to besunk in the snorkeling lagoon at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island. Here, the two submarines were placed in various areas of the snorkeling lagoon and covered with cargo netting to help sealife cling to them. As of 2008, only one Nautilus submarine still exists, but both it's wheelhouse and dorsal fin have been destroyed by hurricane weather.

[edit] The Voyage
Despite the extensive 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea overhaul the attraction was given, essentially it was still the same as its Californian sister Submarine Voyage, in both its underwater show scenes and narration, except for a few occasional differences.

The adventure began as the guests made their way down into the back of the submarine, bending to miss the low-level raised rear hatch, and finding a place onboard. Throughout the voyage, an eerie organ version of the Disney film's main theme would play on a never-ending loop, allowing for a narration backing as well as a piece of stall music if required. Following the standard Disney-style introduction and safety notes from the helmsman, the narration would be switched on and the voice of Disney voice artist Peter Renaday doing an impression of James Mason's Captain Nemo would fill the interior.

With the submarine clear of the dock, the diving sequence would begin, with hundreds of air bubbles filling the porthole view, creating the illusion of descent. Once clear, the Captain introduced himself to his passengers, and then introduced them to the underwater plains around Vulcania. In the lagoon, guests could see moray eels, crabs, lobsters, sea bass, clams and turtles as well as a host of smaller, tropical fish.

Minutes later, in another tribute to the Disney film, an "underwater party" of divers would come into view, as animatronics wearing replicas of the Harper Goff-designed deep sea diving equipment worked kelp beds and wrangled with rebellious turtles.

With the bubbles from the waterfall at the cavern entrance simulating a surface storm, the Captain would order the submarine down into the depths as a precaution, and the guests enter the show building section of the attraction. Within minutes, the devastation such natural phenomenon can create was made clear with the ominous Graveyard Of Lost Ships, with shipwrecks from various centuries littering the sea bed, guarded by the silent, gliding figures of sharks.

Leaving the destruction behind, the Nautilus would reach the North Pole, circumnavigating the Polar Ice Cap from below the surface, and narrowly avoiding large icebergs stabbing through the water. Venturing deeper, the Nautilus entered the eerie world of the Abyss, where guests viewed examples the many weird and strange species of deepwater fish that thrive in such an environment.

Rising slightly, one of the final discoveries made is the ruins of Atlantis, along with a typical Disney-fied sea serpent, accompanying mermaids, and a treasury bursting with jewels and gold. With the ruins of the ancient civilization soon left behind, the Nautilus would enter the final phase of its journey, with a tribute to the most iconic and memorable part of the 1954 Disney film: The attack of the giant squid. After seeing a much smaller sister Nautilus trapped in the clutches of one such creature (Curiously marked XIII on the tailfin), the passenger submarine would be attacked itself by long, thrashing tentacles.

With a final push to the surface, the Nautilus would clear the caverns and the dangerous squid, and enter the safety of the tropical lagoon, on its way towards the dock.

The Final Dive

Submarine Voyage ride in 199420,000 Leagues became as much of a part of the Magic Kingdom as any of the other attractions that remain there today, and the idea of it being closed struck many as being untrue. When the attraction closed on September 5th 1994 "temporarily", it was assumed that Captain Nemo and his crew would soon be sailing again. However, the Nautilus submarines sat silently exposed on the lagoon to park guests until 1995, when the vehicles were removed to be transported to the backstage areas of Walt Disney World.

In 1996, a couple of props such as the sharks had been removed from the caverns, while plastic coral and sets were removed from the lagoon and eventually destroyed or sold on Ebay. Walt Disney World announced that the attraction was never going to re-open.

Despite many protests and complaints, the ride remained derelict. The infrastructure was abandoned, however the long green queue building was re-themed to serve as a character "meet n' greet" called "The Fantasyland Character Festival". The empty lagoon slowly lost its tranquil clarity, and the exotic palm trees and volcanic rock around the lagoon area would be slowly removed over the years. The show building was abandoned in place, with the complete show scenes and several major animatronics remaining underwater untouched and to rot for about a decade.

There has never been a solid reason given by Disney for closure, however it is regularly claimed that it was a combination of high-maintenance issues, the requirement of a large work force, inconvenience for disabled guests and more. However, several conspiracy theories of deliberate sabotage by Walt Disney World Resort Operations persist to this day. In 2004, Disney finally announced that the skeleton (lagoon and caverns) of the attraction would be completely destroyed, and the land reclaimed for an unspecified future project. This was carried out, and today in place of the attraction is a small Winnie the Pooh play area for children called Pooh's Playful Spot, as well as a sizable field of grass behind it, ready to house a new attraction in the future.

Walt Disney World released a model of the Nautilus attraction vehicle in early January 2007. The model was created by Randy Noble and was limited to 500 pieces. This model quickly sold out in the theme parks, but some pieces still exist on Ebay.

Mike Fink Keel Boats ( extinct )

The Mike Fink Keel Boats were based on the Walt Disney television shows, later made into feature length movies, Davy Crockett's Keel Boat Race and Davy Crockett and the River Pirates. The boats were free-floating and traveled around Tom Sawyer Island.

[edit] Reasons for closing
At about 5:30 p.m. on May 17, 1997, the Disneyland Gullywhumper boat began to rock side to side. It capsized, dumping a full boatload of passengers into the Rivers of America. The boat was removed from the waters for inspection and neither the Gullywhumper nor the Bertha Mae returned for the next operating season. The Bertha Mae was put up on Disney's eBay Auction Site and pocketed $15,000 for it. It was billed as an unseaworthy craft. The Gullywhumper returned to Disneyland's Rivers of America as a prop and was moored on Tom Sawyer Island where passengers on the Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes, the Columbia Sailing Ship, and the Mark Twain Riverboat could see it while passing. Eventually, hull damage caused the boat to flood and sink, and it was finally removed from public view in April 2009.

A former Mike Fink Keel Boat from the Magic Kingdom's version of the attraction today sits as a non-functional prop on the banks of Tom Sawyer Island.

Richard F. Irvine Riverboat ( extinct )

The Richard F Irvine riverboat was named after the Disney executive Richard Irvine. It was the 2nd Riverboat to enter into service on the Rivers of America at the Magic Kingdom. Its counterpart, the Admiral Joe Fowler Riverboat, served from October 2, 1971 through 1980. The Richard F Irvine was completely refurbished and returned to service in 1996 as the Liberty Belle Riverboat. The Liberty Belle underwent an extensive rehab lasting from Sept 2005 to Sept 2006 and is now back plying the waterways of the Magic Kingdom. Coincidentally, Irvine is the late father-in-law to Walt Disney Imagineer / Disneyland Art Director, Kim Irvine, whose mother is the late Leota Toombs.

Admiral Joe Fowler Riverboat ( extinct )

It was named for a retired Naval Admiral who had an important part in the building of Walt Disney World. Admiral Fowler had run the San Francisco naval shipyard during WW II, when Walt was looking for a naval expert to help with the building of the Mark Twain Steamship in 1954 for the then under-construction Disneyland. He found the retired General supervising the construction of tract homes in the San Francisco region as construction boss for the whole Disneyland project. After Disneyland was completed, Fowler stayed on as General Manager of the park for its first 10 years, and assisted with the construction of Walt Disney World. He retired from Disney in 1978 though he continued on as a consultant.

When a second steam ship was added to the Rivers of America in 1973, it was named for imagineer Richard F Irvine. The original Fowler was damaged during a refurbishment in 1980. The Disney company decided that having TWO steamships in the Magic Kingdom was not necessary so the Fowler was scrapped. [1]

In 1999, one of the ferries that crosses the Seven Seas Lagoon taking guests from the Ticket and Transportation Center to the Magic Kingdom was renamed in his honor; it was originally known as the Magic Kingdom I, and is the one with the Green side panels.

Davy Crockett's Explorr Canoes ( extinct )

Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes debuted in Frontierland on opening day at Walt Disney World. A C ticket was required for guests to board the 35-foot (11 m) long canoes from a dock located to the north of the Tom Sawyer Island raft launch and travel along the same path as other watercraft on the Rivers of America. Walt Disney World permanently closed the attraction in 1994. [1]

If you're wondering why you're asked where you're from when you check in at the podium at the Liberty Tree, you'll soon have your answer. In keeping with the Colonial theme, "the Smith's from Pennsylvania" are summoned and escorted to one of six rooms.

Colonial furnishings and artifacts provide a comfortable setting while you enjoy your meal. The menu is influenced by New England fare, but there are plenty of other choices to satisfy your appetite.

At lunchtime, the Liberty Tree Tavern is an often overlooked gem and provides a wonderful respite from the typically hectic Magic Kingdom day.

The Haunted Mansion

Fun Fact: At Disneyland, the Haunted Mansion was completed by 1963, but the Imagineers couldn't decide what to do with the inside. This delayed the opening of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland for several years (1969 - and we thought Test Track was bad!!)

Year Opened: 1971

Follow the howls of the wolf to the special effects and ghostly gags of the Haunted Mansion, 999 happy haunts, but there's always room for one more! This popular attraction starts to line up outdoors under a canopy. It can get very hot waiting here in the summer months. As they wait, guests are treated to the humorous headstones that have inscriptions such as "Here lies poor old Fred, A great big rock fell on his head". The mansion itself is of the gothic style reminiscent of the 18th Century Hudson River Valley structures.

Butlers and maids (always in character) greet you at the door and escort you into the library (or stretching room, does the ceiling go up or does the floor go down?)

TIP: Remember to watch the picture over the fireplace changing as you are entering the room.

Guests move on to the awaiting Doom Buggies for their 8 minute journey through the mansion. The special effects are terrific, especially the duelers in the ballroom scene. In typical Disney fashion, attention is paid to the finest details you'll notice something different every time you go on this ride. No cleanup is required in this stately manor, dusting here requires the spreading of it, not the wiping up.

While not seriously frightening, you may want to think twice about bringing very young kids on this one. (Sometimes a small flashlight helps to make the dark scenes less scary.)

Ask Cast Members about the legend of Master Gracey. Guests must be able to transfer from wheelchairs. Don't forget to check out the ghost horse hearse out front.

After being closed for several months for refurbishment and guest anticipation, Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion has re-opened.

Just as when Pirates opened after a lengthy rehab, there was a great deal of speculation and hesitation about any changes made to the beloved Mansion. This is one of the attractions with a very loyal fan base.

The fan base and everyone else can relax and rejoice. The Haunted Mansion looks and sounds terrific.

There have been some spooky additions made.

The story of the Bride and her many husbands has been expanded with a new Bride in a new location.
The carnival-like neon spiders and spider webs are gone.
The wallpaper with the eyes has been changed.
There is a new gallery of paintings with some special twists at the beginning.
Madame Leota no longer rests on her table.
The graveyard scene has been enhanced
The banquet scene has been enhanced
And what is sure to get the most attention is the new “staircase effect” as your doom buggy begins to ascend the main staircase into the Mansion. It’s an awesome addition.
New visitors will get to experience a classic Disney attraction in all its glory and we think long time fans will be pleased to see an old friend looking and sounding better than ever.

Liberty Square River Boat

The Liberty Belle is an authentic replica of an old paddle wheel riverboat. It travels down the Rivers of America and circles Tom Sawyer Island several times a day. This scenic tour offers a variety of props along the riverbank to simulate a wild west effect. While not a thrilling adventure, this 16 minute long attraction offers a short respite from the busy crowds. The boat holds approximately 450 guests and has 3 decks from which to view the passing scenery. The boat is wheelchair accessible.

Hall of Presidents

I'll be the first to admit, its been years since I've visited this attraction. (I think Hoover was President at the time.) It became the perennial threat if the kid's were misbehaving, "if you don't knock it off, we're going to the Hall of Presidents." They were angels from that point on.

On the serious side, Disney does know how to do promote patriotism. This attraction will not disappoint those who might enjoy a bit of Americana with that Disney touch.

The show begins with a film featuring images of specially produced paintings. The accompanying narration details the creation of the Constitution and the formation of the Presidency.

As the film comes to an end, the stage is lit and there they are, the 42 incredibly life like audio-animatronic figures of all of the American presidents.

When the Presidents are named, you'll see a lot of realistic gestures such as nodding, a bit of fidgeting and the occassional whisper (do you think that Taft is making fun of the tourists?)

All of the clothing on the figures is an authentic reproduction of their respective eras, including the braces on Franklin Delano Roosevelt's legs.

George W. Bush personally recorded his figure's speech. The other speaking part belongs to Abraham Lincoln. Not only does Honest Abe talk, he rises from his chair and accompanies his address with intricate hand gestures and arm movement.

The Hall of Presidents is best suited for adults. Unless your child is a real history buff, chances are they're going to be bored. Still, if the park is busy and/or hot, sinking into one of the 700 comfy theater seats for a bit is a nice break.

The theatre is wheelchair accessible. For hearing impaired guests, reflective captioning is available (ask a Cast Member at the entrance for assistance), and Assistive Listening devices can be used here (check at Guest Services for details).

Fun Fact:

The legendary Disney Sculptor Blaine Gibson is responsible for the creation of the presidential figures. He's come out of retirement to sculpt Reagan and each of the presidents who followed him.

The White House was consulted when preparing to add George W. Bush. To make his figure as accurate as possible, they provided his height, weight, clothing sizes, etc. The wrist watch on the figure is identical to the Timex Indiglo he wears, including the "George W. Bush President January 20, 2001" inscription. The signature red tie was provided by Bush's designer.

Hillary Clinton had the final say over how her husbands likeness was to be depicted in the Hall of Presidents. This included telling the Imagineers how the President combed his hair.

The Tomorrowland Transit Authority is one of those attractions that you wish they'd update, yet when the park is crowded, you're so happy it's there.

You get in your car and head off on a leisurely (S-L-O-W) tour of Tomorrowland. Taking a breather isn't necessarily bad, but about halfway through you're starting to think that the jump to the ground below is doable.

Technically, you're on a 'linear induction' powered track. There are no engines, the cars are magnetically pulled. It's pollution free, so no problems with global warming.

Along the way you'll pass windows overlooking Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin. Then there are the corny gags: 'Paging Mr. Morrow, Mr. Tom Morrow." Feel free to groan.

The one mile tour takes 10 minutes. If you're in need of a little siesta, go ahead and close your eyes. You're not going to miss anything and you may get that little boost of energy that we all need from time to time.

It's continuously loading and low on the 'must do' lists, so you very rarely will find a line. Guests must be ambulatory to experience this attraction.

Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor Comedy Club

The Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor takes you on a quest to collect laughs to generate electricity for Monstropolis.

Your 'Monster of Ceremonies' is none other than Mike Wazowski. He's convinced that he can fill the laugh meter. Roz isn't quite so sure of this plan.

The theater seats 400. You can text jokes that they might use during the show. The technology is amazing. Mike will 'talk' with some visitors and make some good natured jokes at their expense.

Kids really love this show. You know they're convinced that's really Mike Wazowski talking to them. (In a way, they're right.)

There are lots of corny jokes and since it seats so many guests, the wait usually isn't bad. Sitting and laughing for awhile is always a welcome break to the day.

Tommorowland Indy Speed Way

The roar of mini gas-powered sports cars and the smell of exhaust fumes indicate that you're at the Tomorrowland Speedway. Guests drive their cars around a 2000' track (on a rail) at death defying speeds of up to 7 miles per hour. This attraction is most appealing to young children, but children must be 52" or taller to drive alone. If you get behind a slow driver, the 4 minute ride can be even longer and a simulated bumper car ride may ensue. In spite of the 4 lanes of track, this ride is slow to load and the line-up to get off is even slower.

TIP: When lining up in the outside queue, turn right at the first loading area, this line is usually shorter.

Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer from their chairs.

Astro Orbitor

Tomorrowland's Astro Orbiter takes you spinning high over the Magic Kingdom in Buck Rogers style rockets.

This is not for anyone with a fear of heights. Not only can you move your rocket 'up', you have to take an elevator to get to the loading area. The views are great but make no mistake, this is much, much higher than Dumbo.

You'll often see a line for Astro Orbiter. Between taking the elevator and not being able to accommodate a lot of guests per ride, this one requires patience.

Wheelchair guests must be able to transfer to the attraction.

Open until dusk, Tom Sawyer Island is one big playground for all kids. Accessible only by raft, the island is a walk through attraction. This is a great haven to unwind where adults can sit on rocking chairs and watch the hustle and bustle of the Magic Kingdom across the Rivers of America, whilst relaxing amidst the shade of the great oaks, pines, red maples, elms and sycamores. Tom Sawyer Island also offers a place for kids to let off steam as they meander through the caves and play in Fort Sam Clemens.

Families can cross the barrel bridge and explore the working water wheel, follow the dirt paths and then rest on benches found scattered throughout. Tom Sawyer Island is also home to Aunt Polly's Dockside Inn. The menu there is limited, but this is a wonderful place to picnic on cold fried chicken, ham & cheese sandwiches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ice cream. Wash it all down with a cool glass of lemonade. The rafts that transport you back to the "mainland" can have lengthy waits. The Island is not accessible to guests in wheelchairs.

Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain Fun Fact: Some of the animatronics used in Splash Mountain were taken from the old "America Sings" attraction at Disneyland.

One of the Magic Kingdom's major attractions is Splash Mountain. Based on the 1946 Walt Disney film, "Song of the South", this ride features the antics of Brer Fox and Brer Bear's attempts to catch the wily Brer Rabbit as he looks for his laughing place. Over 100 Audio-animatronic figures entertain you as your log boat winds its way through caves, swamps and bayous, and down three minor drops before climaxing with a 52 foot plunge through the briar patch after Brer Rabbit outfoxes Brer Fox. A camera captures the look of fearful delight on your faces as you enter the final plunge. These pictures are displayed at the end of the ride and are available for purchase. This water flume adventure is just under 12 minutes in length. Due to the overwhelming popularity of this ride however, the lineups to get in could be much longer than the ride itself.

On busy days long winding queues are opened, beginning outside in partial shade and leading into the cool cavern where your journey begins. While the ride is fun for guests of all ages, a height restriction of 40" is in effect. Parents may use the "switching off" option. There is a very good chance that you'll get wet so be prepared. While it may be refreshing on hot days, wet clothes can get a little chilly on cooler evenings.

Splash Mountain TIP: One of the best times to ride Splash Mountain is during parades, daytime or nighttime.

Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer to the log boats in order to ride this.

Country Bear Jamboree

Fun Fact: This was the first major attraction to be debuted at Walt Disney World, then moved to other Disney parks world wide.

Based on a suggestion by Walt Disney himself, the Country Bear Jamboree has all the makings of an old-fashioned hoe-down. This entertaining knee-slapping fun is held in Grizzly Hall and features 20 Audio-animatronic bears. Starring the 7 foot tall Henry as the Master of Ceremonies, the show is 17 minutes long and offers corny humor and the singing talents of entertainers such as the Five Bear Rugs, Teddi Barra the Tampa Temptation and hear the harmony of Bubbles, Bunny and Beulah.
Although more popular with the older and younger folks, this is a popular attraction and long lines are not uncommon. However don't be disheartened by this, the theatre is large and once the doors open, large groups will go in at one time. This show is wheelchair accessible and guests with hearing difficulties will note that assistive listening devices can be used here and are available at Guest Services. Reflective Captioning is also provided for the deaf, ask a Cast Member at the entrance for assistance. During the holiday season, a Christmas version is offered.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

In the midst of landscape designed to resemble Monument Valley, Utah,sits the 197' butte that is the centerpiece of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Set during the gold rush days in the flooded mine town of Tumbleweed, this runaway mine car roller coaster features 20 Audio-animatronic figures including donkeys, chickens, possums, and the rainmaker himself, Professor Cumulus Isobar.

The authenticity is evident in the antique mining equipment found around the attraction and the smell of sulfur as you pass the phosphorescent pools and see the red eyes of the cave's inhabitants as they watch you pass. Riders will also encounter falling rocks and an earthquake. The ride is geared more towards adults and teens and a height restriction of 40" is in effect. Parents may use the "switching off" option. Just under 4 minutes in length, riders will find themselves tossed side to side in the car.

Thrill seekers will prefer riding in the back of the train as it is more exciting than in the front. You really have to pay attention or you may miss the great scenery and attention paid to detail like the skeleton of the dinosaur built into the mountain. This is one of the Magic Kingdom's major attractions and lineups can be quite lengthy.

Thunder Mountain Tip: Ride during parades, daytime or night time, as the lineups are usually shorter then.

Queues wind through an old windowless clapboard building and the heat can be quite stifling during the hot summer months.

Thunder Mountain Tip: A mister fan can come in handy while waiting in line on a hot day.

Riding at night gives you a whole new experience as you fly by the twinkling lights of the Magic Kingdom. Wheelchair guests must be able to transfer from their wheelchairs into the train in order to ride.

Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Turtoriol

Arrrr....Captain Jack Sparrow holds court outside the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction to enlist budding pirates in joining his crew.

Alongside Captain Jack is Mack, his steadfast shipmate. Together they'll teach you the secret of being a swashbuckling, sword wielding pirate.

The Pirate Tutorial is part of the Year of the Million Dreams promotion. On a recent visit, I dragged my 20 something daughter with me to watch it. Being that we're both in love with Johnny Depp, we wanted to see how close this Jack Sparrow wannabe comes to the character. We were not disappointed except for one detail that's clearly been neglected. Our Captain Jack looked like he came from filming a Crest White Strips commercial.

Other than having perfect teeth, he did a great job. He had the same quirky mannerisms as Captain Jack (and he was darned good looking.) The kids who were enlisted to take the Pirate Oath sported ear to ear smiles. Overall, we were both happy that we took the time to see it.

Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse

The "Swiss Family Treehouse" is based on the 1960 live action Disney feature film "Swiss Family Robinson."

The first thing you think when you visit this "attraction" is "why?" Next you wonder why they also built it at Disneyland Paris and Tokyo. At least it's predecessor at Disneyland Anaheim was converted it to a Tarzan theme. No such luck in Florida.

Make no mistake, this is a treehouse and it doesn't come with an elevator. That means navigating the 116 steps.

Along your never ending trek will be such exciting scenes as the pulley system that uses bamboo buckets and a water wheel to get water to the top of the tree. When your attention isn't riveted on this and the other "amazing innovations", you're probably considering backtracking. (Sorry, once you start, you have to keep going.)

While it does have some devotees, the "Swiss Family Treehouse" is one of those attractions that you're most likely to try once and never bother with again.

Now for some facts: The tree is known as Disneyodendron eximus, which means "out of the ordinary Disney tree". It's manmade with concrete roots. The 1400 limbs are constructed of steel coated in cement. The 300,000 plastic leaves were attached by hand. The tree is 90 feet high and 60 feet wide.

The "Swiss Family Treehouse" is one of the few attractions that are totally inaccessible for people who are not ambulatory.

Pirates of the Caribean

If you haven't heard about 'Pirates of the Caribbean', you probably just arrived from another planet.

Pirates is the attraction that the incredibly popular 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies are based on which has now become the attraction that is based on the movies.
Sounds confusing? It really isn't and this ride has only gotten better with the addition of Captain Jack Sparrow.

The imposing fortress at the end of Adventureland is home to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The queue twists and turns in a darkened, cool underground cavern that leads to the boat ride. Once you're onboard, you'll float through a cave that heads to a quick, dark plunge.

As your boat enters the main area, you'll find yourself in the midst of a battle with cannon shots whizzing by. Captain Barbossa himself shouts orders from the pirate ship.

Be on the lookout for Captain Jack Sparrow. He'll pop up from a barrel, peek from behind a mannequin and at the conclusion of the ride, he's atop a mountain of booty. (You'll also get to see an image of Davy Jones from the latest Pirates of the Caribbean blockbuster.)

The ten minute cruise is fun for all ages. While the original Audio-animatronics are a bit simplistic in comparison to the latest additions, the detail is amazing. There's realistic costuming, unique facial features and even hairy legs on the pirate swinging his leg from the bridge.

Listen and you'll hear a familiar song made even more popular by the movie, "Yo ho, yo ho, a pirates' life for me."

Fortunately, while the ride purists initially objected to the planned changes, the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have only made this attraction better. (Think of the movie version of The Country Bears and you see what a disaster it might have been.)

With popularity comes an increase in wait times. Pirates of the Caribbean never was too bad when it came to crowds, but that has changed now that Johnny Depp, I mean, Jack Sparrow, has come onboard.

The Pirates of the Caribbean attraction is quick loading and each boat holds about 30 people. Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer to the ride vehicle.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin has you take flight over Agrabah on an 'enchanted' carpet.

Basically, it's the Dumbo ride converted into throw rugs that can accommodate a party of 4 per 'carpet.'

The sixteen 'rugs' surround a giant Genie lamp. The riders in the front seat control the up and down motion, while the back seat controls the pitch of the carpet from front to back.

There are some attractions that you do once, and this falls into that category. If you have little ones, they'll probably like it but if time is tight, you're better off fitting in another ride other than this one.

Adventureland isn't known for 'wide open spaces' and this attraction makes the congestion worse. Still, if you're not too busy dodging strollers take a look down. There are some 'gems' imbedded in the walkways.

You'll also want to keep an eye on those camels. They'll "spit" on you when you're least expecting it.

Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer in order to ride.

Jungle Cruise

Fun Fact: Walt Disney originally wanted live animals to be a part of the Disney Jungle Cruise attraction. Once he realized that he couldn't control their movements, audio-animatronics were used.

The Jungle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom takes you on a 10 minute tour of four continents. The early version of the Jungle Cruise was serious and based on Disney's True Life Adventure Series. More than likely, it wasn't packing them in since this ride is now one of the funniest at Disney World.

You'll board a boat with names like "Amazon Annie" with your trusted guide at the helm. While they all follow the same "shtick", the guides are what make this attraction so much fun, especially if they add a few ad-libs. Even when you've heard the same corny joke a thousand times before, you can't help but laugh.

You'll pass through hippo infested waters, but don't worry, they'll only attack if their ears are wiggling (which they always are.) On the shore there's a rhino keeping the hunters "busy," lions lounging on a rock outcropping, headhunters, zebras, snakes and giant butterflies all amidst a tropical landscape that any jungle would be proud of.

If you manage to stay dry by the waterfall, watch out for the elephants. Will they douse you or are you safe? Only you know the secret if you've gone on a Jungle Cruise.

Take a close look at the airplane that's in one of the scenes. If you're wondering where the other half went, look no further than the Casablanca scene in the Great Movie Ride over at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Eventually you'll pass through a darkened Cambodian temple where tigers are watching over ancient treasures. Once you emerge from this tunnel, you head back to civilization.

This is a Fast Pass attraction. If it's a hot day, you'll want to use this option. This attraction is outdoors and the queue, while covered, can get very uncomfortable.

The Jungle Cruise boats are relatively quick loading. Guests in wheelchairs or ECV's can remain in them. Sign Language interpreters for the deaf are available on special days. For more info, call the Sign Language Services Co-ordinator at (407)824-5217.

Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management

Fun Fact: The original plan for the Tiki Room was to have it as a Disney restaurant, not an attraction.

"The Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management" is a bit of a misnomer. The "new" part was the addition of Zazu from the Lion King and Iago from Aladdin back in '98.

This sentimental favorite was the first Disney attraction to use Audio-animatronic exclusively. It originally opened in Disneyland in 1963 as "The Enchanted Tiki Room - Tropical Serenade."

The show combines elements of that original attraction with some now familiar characters and songs. Aladdin's abrasive Iago and the Lion King's sensible Zazu join Jose, Michael, Pierre and Fritz, the original hosts of the Tiki Birds. There's singing, jokes and a tropical storm during the performance.

If the Magic Kingdom is busy and you're looking for a relaxing break, this 20 minute show fits the beak, I mean bill. It's rarely crowded and all ages can enjoy it. It's especially cute for the little kids (although the "big kids" may end up looking for the nearest exit.)

True story: When my two girls were young, while they pretty much had outgrown this attraction, they asked to go. Amidst all of the singing, drums, thunder and lightning, I look down and my youngest is sound asleep. You've got to love those Mickey memories.

The Tiki Birds is wheelchair accessible. For guests requiring assistance with hearing, assistive listening devices to amplify the sound are available from Guest Services.

Haircuts are $17.00 for men or women, $14.00 for children age 10 and under. They don't take reservations. It's all first-come, first-served. The best time to go is either first thing in the morning or during the parade in the afternoon.

"First Haircuts" are the shops specialty. Children who receive their first haircut at the shop will get a complimentary Mickey Ears "First Haircut" stitched on the back and a certificate of the unforgettable event to take home.

The barber shop quartet "The Dapper Dans" sometimes drop in and perform. Shop hours are usually 9:00am-5:00pm (times vary, last haircut taken at 4:30pm). Open seven days a week.

Take a ride back in time on one of Walt Disney World's Steam Powered Engines.

You can't miss the Main Street train station as you enter the Magic Kingdom. This scenic stop is the first spot where you'll hear "all aboard" before the train sets out on its 20 minute journey along the rails.

In addition to Main Street, the trains stop at Frontierland and Toontown. If you're looking for a break from the crowds as well as an easy way to get around the park, the trains are the way to go.

Disney World Railroad Fun Facts:

The Disney World trains are named the Lilly Belle (after Walt's wife Lillian), the Roger E. Broggie (legendary Disney Imagineer), the Roy O. Disney (Walt's brother) and there's one named after Walt himself.

The locomotives were built in the U.S. between 1916 and 1928 and were sent to the Yucatan where they were used to haul freight. Walt was a passionate railroad fan and had them brought to Disney World where they've transported guests since the park opened.

Movie it! Shake it! Celebrate it! Parade

The parade will be performed several times a day. The daily parade times will be in the times guide you can pick up as you enter the park.

It starts down by City Hall and moves down Main Street towards the castle. There are 5 floats. One has a performer on it along with Mickey and Minnie. The other 4 have big boxes with bows on them. They come down Main Street and turn right around the hub. That would be the best place to watch the parade from. They circle the hub once and the main float stops in front of the castle. The Mad Hatter, Lumiere, Sebastian, Genie appear from the boxes. There are some different characters in this parade. But I was surprised to see that Stitch wasn’t in this parade.

Town Square Exposition Hall

As you pass under the Main Street Walt Disney World Railroad station, you'll find the "Exposition Hall" on your right. Hosted by Kodak, this Camera Center is a terrific spot to get any camera supplies that you may need.

What many guests overlook is what lies behind the main shop. There are wonderful character cutouts that you're welcome to use to take some pix, and there are some interactive kiosks. Don't be surprised if you find a Dwarf or two....or seven. They sometimes can be found here for some memorable pictures and fun.

Finally, for pin collectors, there's a select assortment of pins found here. You'll also find a variety of picture frames available for purchase, as well as a limited assortment of merchandise.

Throughout the day you'll find the Dapper Dans Barbershop Quartet performing. With their trademark straw hats, striped vests, bowties, spats and taps, they're worth taking the time to stop and enjoy. (That's the shame about so many of these little moments. Most people rush right by them.) If you see the Dapper Dans, take the time to listen to their four part harmony for a bit.

Minnie's Country House This pink and lavender home definitely has a feminine touch about it with its heart engraved shutters. Minnie's home includes such interactive touches as an answering machine, (where you can listen to messages from Mickey and Goofy), and you can watch the cake falling in her oven. The microwave pops popcorn too. A cute little gazebo in the back completes the walking tour.

The tent-like structure Hall of Fame houses the County Bounty merchandise shop, as well as a place to have an up close and personal encounter with your favorite Disney pal. There are 3 lines to meet the characters, one for the Princess meetings, one for the Villains and one for Mickey's Pals. A limited number of people are let into the rooms containing the characters so children are ensured a turn at interacting with their Disney friends.

A walk through tour of Mickey's bright yellow house is a must see for any fan of the mouse. Sports are the main theme of this distinctly masculine abode. Out in the back yard, you'll see Pluto's doghouse as you check out the garden, where you'll find the large "Mickey-shaped" pumpkins of the "Pumpkinus Maximouse" species. Meander through Mickey's garage and look for all of the "not so hidden" Mickeys before moving along into the Judge's Tent where you can personally meet and greet Mickey Mouse himself. Long line-ups are to be expected here, but if you have a child that absolutely must meet Mickey, it's worth the wait.

The Barnstormer at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm (extinct)

The pint-sized thrill ride in Mickey's Toontown Fair is this roller coaster found at Goofy's Wiseacre Farm. The premise behind this is that guests fly in Goofy's out of control airplane as it swoops, twists and turns and eventually ends up going through the barn much to the surprise of the Audio-animatronic chickens inside. The ride itself is fast but fairly tame, and short, less than a minute in length. It's a great ride for the young and the young at heart, although the cars are small and are not designed to hold larger adults.

FINAL SWORD CEREMONY TOOK PLACE ON AUGUST 15, 2006

This was a cute ceremony where Merlin chose a child to pull the sword out of the stone. (That thing didn't budge otherwise.) It took place in front of the Carousel and was a nice little diversion to watch. The lucky child chosen would always have the power to pull the sword out and a special celebration followed. The new "ruler of the realm" would be outfitted with a robe and crown and presented with a keepsake medallion and certificate.

The sword in the stone is still located in front of the Carousel.

Fairy Tale Garden

Taking place in the forecourt of Cinderella's Castle, 'Dream Along with Mickey' features everyone's favorite Mouse and Disney characters. This dream inspired show touches on "Happily Ever After" as well as dreams of exciting adventures. This show actually focuses on Donald Duck (who once again, does not get top billing, same as with Mickey's PhilharMagic.) The Disney characters join in helping Donald realize his dreams. Minnie, Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty are among the talented performers.
A villain that is rarely seen outside of the parades is part of this production. Sleeping Beauty's Maleficent is intent on turning Donald's dreams into nightmares. As with every great Disney tale, good conquers evil and the result is a fun, character filled finale.

'Dream Along with Mickey' is performed daily. Check the park schedule for the day's performances.

Mickey’s PhilharMagic, the latest 3-D attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is beyond compare. Taking three years to complete, and using the combined efforts of Walt Disney Feature Animation and the Walt Disney Imagineering teams, this production brings to life everything that makes Disney Magic as real as you or I on the big screen.

It’s Show time! But wait, the orchestra is missing! Oh dear where is Donald? This may be Mickey’s Orchestra but Donald steals the show, literally. The mischief that follows Donald is hysterically appropriate for our short tempered friend.

The show brings you on a magical trip through many of your favorite Disney films. In hot pursuit of his runaway "prize". Donald is asked to "be our guest" by Lumiere (Beauty and the Beast), washed away by Brooms (Fantasia), joins Ariel under the sea wishing she could be "Part of that world". Flying high above London with Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, Shown that Simba "Just can’t wait to be King", and Aladdin and Jasmine lead him on a Magic Carpet Ride thru a "Whole New World" before Mickey saves the day.
Now, just telling what Mickey’s PhilharMagic is about does not do this show justice. From start to finish you are totally immersed into the world of animation. With the sights the sounds and even the smells (Sort of like coming home to an apple pie fresh from the oven).This is the kind of thing that people come to the Magic Kingdom to see. The ability of Imagineers and Artists of Disney to take you out of reality and bring you into the world that is exclusively Disney.

To give you an idea of the immense scale of this Attraction, the theater houses the world’s largest seamless movie screen. With Computer Generated Images (CGI) you forget that you’re sitting in a theater wearing 3-D glasses. For instead of stretching your imagination yourself, Disney does it for you.

An Attraction that can’t be missed: you’re favorite Disney Characters, the latest in computer animation, and the Entire Cast of the Disney Co. Mad Tea Party

If you like to spin, you will love the Alice in Wonderland inspired Mad Tea Party. Sadly, I'm not among those who can tolerate this ride.

You sit in oversized teacups and you can spin a lot or a little as the entire ride spins as well. If you have a sensitive tummy or suffer from motion sickness, definitely skip this attraction.

One cute feature that you can see whether you ride it or not is the dormouse popping out of the teapot in the center.

If you're an Alice in Wonderland fan, she often does character meet and greets at the garden surrounding this attraction as well as the Mad Hatter, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum, etc. The Mad Tea Party is a great backdrop for a souvenir photo.

This ride is a virtual little kid magnet. They love the spinning motion, especially being able to turn it themselves. Because it's on the slow side to load/unload, long lines are not uncommon. It's best to head here first thing in the morning (and you may want to have breakfast after riding it.)

This ride is accessible to wheelchair guests who are able to transfer to the teacups.

Pooh's Playful Spot

Cinderella's Golden Carrousel

No self-respecting amusement park would be without a carousel. As you would expect, Disney's is spectacular.

There's a lot of history behind Cinderella's Golden Carrousel. Legend has it that Walt Disney was inspired to include one after taking his daughter's to the merry-go-round at LA's Griffith Park.

It was built by Italian woodcarvers in 1917 and featured at Olympic Park in Maplewood, New Jersey. For trivia fans, it's technically the oldest attraction in Fantasyland. Now it plays Disney tunes as it spins. We somehow doubt that was the case 90 years ago.

When Disney acquired it, the company artists refurbished the 90 horses so that no two are exactly alike. There are eighteen hand painted scenes that tell the story of Cinderella on the wooden canopy that covers this attraction. This 2 minute ride is perfect for young children. If you're a frequent visitor, take a photo of your little one with each visit and watch him/her 'grow' over the years.

Speaking of photos, wait until dark. Cinderella's Golden Carousel is amazing at night. Even if you opt not to ride it, take a minute to enjoy it's beauty.

This is considered a minor attraction but it is a bit slow loading so there may be a line. Wheelchair guests must be able to transfer from their chairs to the horses.

Peter Pan's Flight

There's something about Peter Pan's Flight that makes it one of the most popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom.

It's about as low tech as you can get and hasn't changed since it opened over 30 years ago. There are no fancy animatronics and a lot of the 'special effects' are created via glow in the dark paint. It's a very simple ride, especially by today's standards. Still, there's that Disney magic that makes it special in a way that's hard to describe.

Maybe it's the fact that your pirate ship 'flies'. You're looking down as you fly over the Darling's nursery, London, past the mermaids, and through the battle between Captain Hook and Peter Pan. The Croc is waiting for his nemesis in the end.

This is an attraction that you definitely should try to experience. Don't be surprised if you feel like a kid again who believes that with a little faith, trust and pixie dust you can fly.

If there's the usual long wait, Fast Pass is the way to go.

Guests in wheelchairs must be able to transfer.
